Music + Design

I am a music lover.
I used to be a music snob, but after years of working in commercial radio in Australia I realised its not about whats cool or hip or on trend (does saying those phrases make me sound daggy?...whatever - I don't care) its about what speaks to your soul at that particular moment of your life.

The music collection in our house is diverse to say the least. It is a mish mash of CD's, records and cassette tapes from 3 sources and covering many decades and genres - all of which I have meticulously transferred on to the family iTunes account (easy with CD's, a bit $$$ for the records and tapes!). I have a very strict process for adding music to the library and i have spent hours combing websites and scanning images so that every song has cover art. Even the songs released before cover art was a thing have cover art in our library.
Our "Family Faves" youtube playlist is nuts. It recently spat out Slipknot, Boney M, Beastie Boys, Nirvana, Elton John & The Wiggles in that order. Yep. We got PsychoSocial on The Rivers of Babylon. Fought for Our Right to Party while Smelling Like Teen Spirit and Held our Tiny Dancer Closer in the Big Red Car - all within the space of 20 odd minutes!
We definitely have something for everyone at our house!!

I find inspiration mainly from music and from the physical world around me. I love the emotion that music conjures and i love the shapes and colours and lines that people take for granted in their busy lives.
I always have music on when I'm working, whether I'm sketching out ideas or crafting a design digitally. If I need to focus, I choose instrumentals - so I don't get carried away singing and if I need motivation I choose music that holds good memories for me. I also try to think about what music suits the occasion i am designing for and draw inspirations from that too.
When i created The Flamingle PYP Invitation set I listened to a lot of Beach Boys, 60's surf music and Ministry Of Sound Chillout compilations and i actually curated a playlist to accompany the party.
The Flamingle Set was designed originally for my daughters 1st birthday, She's a February child so it seemed like a fitting theme. I ordered some paper pineapples, staked some plastic flamingoes in the yard and carved a 2 tier "cake" from a whole watermelon - because, why not!
The thought of all this sticky, summery, shiny goodness being ruined by silence or the radio resulted in the playlist curation.
I spent ages on this thing...so it seems unfair that only the 80 family and friends (yes, eighty, my husband comes from a big family okay!) that came to the party got to hear it, so i have decided to release my curated party playlists so music is one less thing you'll have to worry about when you're planning your big celebration.

I have playlists for most of the PYP and Fill In The Blanks ranges that I will add into spotify and then share with you here on the website and on facebook + Insta!
Im so excited to offer this fun extra to you all - hope you enjoy listening as much as i have enjoyed curating the lists!!
