Bespoke Wedding - Navy and Red Invitations & Stationery
Ellie McGrath
I love designing for weddings, for love, and its even better when you know the couple.
Last year I was stoked to be asked to design wedding invitations and associated stationery for a family friend, Samantha.
Her brief was simple: Navy, Red/Burgundy flowers and a hint of geo.
Cool, I say, I can do that!…Whens the wedding?
IN 3 MONTHS!
Samantha gave me a very tight deadline, but after all my study at Shillington all those years ago, I thrive on a quickly approaching deadline, so off I go….
I started (as usual) with some research. Layout, composition, typefaces etc. It helped that Samantha said she liked my “The June” Wedding Invite, but wanted her very own version.
Given the short time until the wedding the invites, RSVP cards, Information Cards and envelopes needed to be completed ASAP. So instead of creating my own illustrations I purchased some ready made floral illustrations from Clementine Creative on Creative Market that perfectly matched the theme!
The A5 Invitations were double sided, with the reverse giving the gift/wishing well details.

Samantha also wanted matching RSVP cards and Info Cards to let her guests know about travel and accomodation options, which I designed in the same theme. After 2 rounds of proofs and some small changes to wording, final approval was given and the Invitations, RSVP Cards and Info Cards were sent to the printer. Beautiful deep red C5 size envelopes were ordered and sent directly to the clients town.
This bespoke wedding design project was an interstate collaboration, the wedding and couple being in Central West NSW and me in Victoria. Communication with the clients was done via messenger and email and the printing was done in batches, Round One (A5 Invitations, A6 RSVP Cards & A6 Information Cards) printed By Geelong Reprographics in Victoria and Round Two (Tent-fold Place Cards and A2 Seating Chart) printed in Orange NSW by GK Craig Printing.
The beauty of bespoke or custom design is being able to have non standard items or designs incorporated.
In this instance, The Bride and Groom wanted the Place Cards (which also included a thank you note on the reverse) and Seating Chart to be left blank so that they could handwrite the guests names once the RSVP’s were finalised. Such a lovely way to add a personal touch to the day.

Most weddings have a theme, be it a colour theme, location theme or even literary or pop culture.
The Navy and Red Floral theme featured on the wedding invitations and stationery was carried throughout Sam and Tim’s big day through gorgeous pink, white and red bouquets, bridesmaid dresses, red groomsman ties and they even continued the geometric theme, saying their vows in front of a giant hexagonal arbor, hand made by the brides brother, draped with flowers.
It was a delight to design for Sam and Tim!
